California state Senate election results 2026: Live updates for all 20 races
California voters will decide 20 state Senate races in the Nov. 3, 2026, midterm elections, with contests across the Central Valley, Los Angeles, San Diego and other parts of the state.
State senators serve four-year terms, with half of the 40-member chamber up for election every two years. Republicans are seeking to reduce Democrats’ supermajority in the Legislature, with several closely watched contests in districts that have been competitive in recent elections.
In the capital region, Republican state Sen. Roger Niello of Fair Oaks faces Democratic challenger Sean Frame in the 6th District. Niello is set to become the Senate’s Republican minority leader in November, succeeding Brian Jones, whose term is ending.
In the Central Valley, Democratic Assemblymember Esmeralda Soria faces Republican Merced City Councilmember Darin DuPont in the 14th District, which includes parts of Merced, Madera and Fresno counties.
In the 16th, Democratic Sen. Melissa Hurtado faces Republican Guillermo Gonzalez in a district spanning portions of Fresno, Kings, Tulare and Kern counties. Hurtado narrowly won reelection in 2022 by just 13 votes.
Two Los Angeles-area districts feature contests between Democrats for open seats. Brian Goldsmith faces West Hollywood City Councilmember John Erickson in the 24th District, while Sara Hernandez and Sarah Rascón are competing for the 26th seat being vacated by Sen. Maria Elena Durazo.
In the San Diego area, Democratic Sen. Catherine Blakespear faces Republican Laura Bassett in the 38th District. In the 40th, Democrat Mara Elliott is running against Republican Kristie Bruce-Lane.
